Ambush

It is darkest and best for sleep
in the moment the sun
first contemplates its return;

(it has, thus far,
decided to return).

But don't think about this.

If you do, you may wake
after it does

And spoil sleep
like a hot iron
through a silk shirt,

For daylight penetrates thin lids
dismantling sleep
like a safe-cracker.

Sleep is the mightiest whinger.

When hijacked
it sends a guerilla force
to roam the terrain
behind your eyes.
